TrimScreen is an extension that shaves pixels off the left and right edges of the screen.
Why would you want to do this?
Well. I dropped my PowerBook and broke the LCD screen. The screen still partially worked, but the leftmost 80 columns of pixels were permanently black. This made it hard to use the PowerBook because the Apple menu and File menus were no longer visible. Because it was very expensive to get the screen replaced, I wrote TrimScreen, which means that my PowerBook now has a functional screen again (except instead of 640x480 it’s now 560x480 ).
How to use TrimScreen
If your Mac’s damage is different to my 80 pixels lost on the left, open TrimScreen with ResEdit and edit the nrct resource. Set the second field (‘left’) of the rect to the number of pixels you want trimmed from the left edge of the screen and the fourth field (‘right’) to the number of pixels you want trimmed from the right edge of the screen. (Don’t worry if ResEdit compains about the ‘left’ value being geater than the ‘right’ value — this is fine.)
Drop TrimScreen into the System Folder and Restart your Mac.
